Today I let a baby nod to sleep on my good shoulder
soothing it with Longfellow
and love painted by Edna St Vincent Millay.
I don’t imagine the baby will remember me
but that’s okay because I didn’t soothe him to sleep for his sake
but for the comfort of
my anxious gut-
squirming around like a needy child
begging for a mother’s warm hug.
Unfortunately, my gut doesn’t have a mother-
I have a mother
and I am unwilling to share.
